USA vs. Brazil live score: USWNT result, updates as Macario strikes early in second international friendly

The United States women look to continue their dominance over South American giants Brazil as they contest the second of two early-April friendlies from San Jose on Tuesday night.

Goals from Trinity Rodman and Lindsey Heaps led the way in the 2-0 win for the USWNT on Saturday in the first meeting at SoFi Stadium.

The victory reestablished a long stretch of dominance for the USWNT over eighth-ranked Brazil, having won 35 of their 43 all-time matchups, including last summer’s Olympic gold medal match. It brought the U.S. to 24 matches unbeaten on home soil over Brazil, with 22 wins and two draws.

Saturday’s victory coupled with a positive result in the second meeting would be a good recovery step after failing to defend home field in the SheBelieves Cup back in February, suffering defeat to Japan in the round robin finale.

USWNT vs. Brazil live updates, highlights from second friendly

57th min: Michelle Cooper has a concussion assessment on the field after she took an elbow to the back of the head and looked woozy getting up. She’s brought off with some support, as she appears a little wobbly even as she’s able to smile and joke with the medical staff, and is replaced by Yazmeen Ryan.

That will be all for two other Americans as well, as Cat Macario will come off and replaced by Lindsey Heaps, who takes the captain’s armband from Emily Sonnett, while Sam Coffey takes over for Korbin Albert.

54th min: Chance, Brazil! LOOKOUT! Brazil has put the United States under serious pressure to begin this half, and with Claire Hutton dispossessed at the top of the U.S. penalty area, Giovana Queiroz has a rip on goal that takes a massive deflection and goes agonizingly wide by mere inches! SO close for Brazil as they look to go in front!

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way in San Jose, with changes for the hosts. Jaedyn Shaw and Alana Cook both comes on for their first appearances of this international window, replacing Lily Yohannes and Tara McKeown.

HALFTIME: USA 1-1 Brazil

A thoroughly entertaining first half comes to an end with the United States and Brazil level on a goal each.

Both teams have had truly bright moments building forward, and both teams have also made critical errors at the back. You can tell the USWNT lineup is young, as the mistakes they’ve made are those of a youthful side. Brazil, for their part, have been really good themselves and have troubled this U.S. side in a number of different ways.

The Brazil goalkeeper has been exceptional save the early U.S. goal, keeping the hosts at bay for now.

45+5 min: Chance, USA! After the Brazil miss, the U.S. breaks down the other way viciously but Michelle Cooper’s effort from a tight angle down the right is saved well by Natascha Honegger!

45+4 min: Chance, Brazil! OH DEAR! HOW HAS DUDA SAMPAIO MISSED?!?!?!? Kerolin cuts it back to the midfielder charging into space from about 15 yards out, but she sails her shot miles high over the crossbar! What a missed opportunity!

35th min: Chance, USA! HOW HAS ALYSSA THOMPSON NOT SCORED?!?!?! An absolutely exceptional block on the line from Isa Haas keeps Thompson out! She’d beaten the goalkeeper with the initial diagonal shot, but the defender makes an outlandish stop!

Then the quickfire follow-up is saved by Natascha Honegger before a third effort from Lily Yohannes from the other side is blocked!

In the aftermath of the scramble, Brazil make an early pair of tactical changes in midfield, as Bruninha is withdrawn and replaced by Luany, while Mariza takes over for Lauren.

31st min: The U.S. has recovered nicely since Kerolin’s goal. They have worked a few half-chances in the last few minutes, and Alyssa Thompson works a shot from long-distance that’s on target but easily caught by Natascha Hoenegger.

22nd min: ANOTHER bad turnover by the U.S. trying to build from the back sees Claire Hutton get tackled inside her own penalty area, but a FABULOUS tackle by Emily Sonnett to prevents Brazil from getting another shot off!

20th min: Chance, Brazil! Whoopsies! The U.S. are nearly left red-faced trying to play out of the back, as goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn makes an absolute mess of things and passes it right to an opponent, but she makes up for it with a big save to maintain the lead!

19th min: Chance, USA! Catarina Macario is clean through on goal seeking her second of the game, but she takes too long to unleash the shot allowing the trailing defender to make a last-ditch tackle! In the end, the offside flag goes up, so it wouldn’t have counted regardless, but had it not, she would have wanted that one back!

14th min: By far the best USWNT moves so far in this game have come two-on-two in the wide areas. Again, Alyssa Thompson gets going down the left but the ball gets away from her and Natascha Honegger can come off her line to collect.

Moments later Michelle Cooper gets another cross in from the right and it fins Lily Yohannes at the top of the six-yard box, but the ball is just slightly behind the charging midfielder and she can’t get a shot off with her back to goal.

11th min: The U.S. has been feisty since the opening goal, but Brazil’s physicality has put off this young lineup effectively enough so far. It’s been a back-and-forth midfield battle for the most part.

A cross by Michelle Cooper on the right is turned away in front of goal, and stays in play for Brazil to recover.

Kickoff: They’re under way at PayPal Park! An extremely young USWNT XI faces a test from the No. 8 ranked team in the world!

USWNT vs. Brazil: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

10 mins to kickoff: The Thompson sisters are both in the USWNT starting lineup for the second time in their careers. A really special moment for them and their family!

30 mins to kickoff: Of note tonight, Trinity Rodman has not dressed for this match. The U.S. has one more player on the roster than allowed in the matchday squad, and goalkeeper Jane Campbell was the one to sit out in the first game. This time, Emma Hayes protects one of her most valuable players so Rodman will be a cheerleader tonight.

45 mins to kickoff: You could have hardly envisioned a younger USWNT lineup than what Emma Hayes has gone with today. In the XI are Lily Yohannes (17 years old), Claire Hutton (19), Giselle Thompson (19), Alyssa Thompson (20), Michelle Cooper (22), and Avery Patterson (22).

The only youngsters not included are Ally Sentnor and Jaedyn Shaw. Sentnor started the first game, while it’s not clear why Shaw has not been given an opportunity yet.

From a sheer experience level, this is the lowest average cap total for a game on home soil since 1999.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! Emma Hayes has rotated the XI a ton.

It appears that Catarina Macario will play at the No. 9 position, while Claire Hutton and Lily Yohannes both start in midfield. Mandy McGlynn takes the gloves in goal.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: As they’re in San Jose for tonight’s match, the USWNT took a visit to the Earthquakes yesterday to hang out with the local MLS team!

1 hour 30 mins to kick: One player who could feature in this match is Claire Hutton, who made her USWNT debut against Australia in the SheBelieves Cup but did not see the field in the first game against Brazil.

The 19-year-old midfielder is already a regular for Vlatko Andonovski with the Kansas City Current, and with the U.S. still not effectively replacing Julie Ertz at the No. 6 position, she could be an option moving forward. Emma Hayes has managed to play with out a No. 6 against a number of inferior opponents, instead pairing dual 8’s Sam Coffey and Lindsey Horan behind a No. 10, but against top-class opposition having an established possessional base could be valuable.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Prior to this match, Emma Hayes was effusive about the senior leadership on this USWNT, name checking Lindsey Heaps (Horan), Crystal Dunn, and Emily Sonnett. She said it allows players like Lily Yohannes to comes through the system at an incredibly young age and be brought along in an environment to grow and contribute.

2 hours to kickoff: While Trinity Rodman collected Woman of the Match honors after the game for her opening goal and tireless effort on the wing, Alyssa Thompson was exceptional on the opposite flank, assisting Rodman’s opener and causing havoc all match. The 20-year-old budding star was hailed as the next big thing when she made her international debut, but the spotlight has faded a bit amidst other front-of-mind stories.

Don’t let that trick you into thinking her stock has dropped — in fact, the opposite. Thompson is in the midst of a potential breakout season, already scoring twice in the first three NWSL seasons for Angel City. Keep an eye on her, especially if she earns a second start today, as she could be tipped to bag her first international goal, which fans believe will be the first of many.

USWNT vs. Brazil lineups, team news

In goal for the United States, Phallon Tullis-Joyce had a strong performance on her international debut in the first match against Brazil. While it would normally track that Jane Cambpell would be the favorite to slide in and take the job here, she did not dress as a substitute in the first match and her availability is unclear. Instead, it’s Mandy McGlynn who takes the gloves.

Rose Lavelle remains absent as she recovers from ankle surgery, and the same is true for Sophia Smith. Trinity Rodman returned up front in the first Brazil game, scoring a goal, while Mallory Swanson is still out of the picture for “personal reasons.” With a number of wide players missing, Alyssa Thompson was exceptional in the first game and has earned another start here today.

The USWNT is still without star defender Naomi Girma who limped off an hour into her debut for Chelsea and is considered “week-to-week” by Chelsea boss Sophia Bompastor. Also absent is fellow defender Tierna Davidson who was forced to withdraw from the squad after suffering an ACL tear for the second time in her career.

USA starting lineup (4-3-3): McGlynn (GK) — Patterson, McKeown, Sonnett, G. Thompson — Hutton, Albert, Yohannes — Cooper, Macario, A. Thompson.

USA subs: Campbell (GK), Tullis-Joyce (GK), Cook, Sams, Dunn, Fox, Heaps, Coffey, Shaw, Ryan, Hatch, Sentnor.

USWNT squad

Goalkeepers: Jane Campbell, Mandy McGlynn, Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Defenders: Alana Cook, Crystal Dunn, Emily Fox, Tara McKeown, Avery Patterson, Emily Sams, Emily Sonnett, Gisele Thompson.

Midfielders: Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, Lindsey Heaps, Claire Hutton, Jaedyn Shaw, Lily Yohannes.

A number of Brazil veterans retired last summer, including legendary duo Marta and Cristiane, plus Bia ZanerattoRafaelle, Luciana, and Tamires.

Playmaker Giovana Queiroz picked up a knee injury in the first leg, and while she soldiered on to complete 89 minutes, her fitness could be protected in this second game. That could see Kerolin come back into the lineup after she logged 17 minutes off the bench on Saturday, working her way back from a long-term injury.

After getting the start in both of the games against Australia last winter, defender Vitoria Calhau suffered a serious knee injury and will miss out. Midfielders Ary Borges and Ana Vitoria were surprisingly not called in despite playing regularly for their clubs.

Brazil starting lineup (3-4-3): Honegger (GK) — Haas, Palermo, Yasmim  — Lauren, Sampaio, Bruninha, Angelina — Kerolin, Queiroz, Portilho.

Brazil subs: Gomes (GK), Lorena (GK), Antonia, Kaka, Tarciane, Leal, Estevam, Mariza, Amanda, Jheniffer, Luany, Ludmila.
