2-time Pro Bowler takes shot at 49ers' Kyle Shanahan for Super Bowl 51 choke

2-time Pro Bowler takes shot at 49ers' Kyle Shanahan for Super Bowl 51 choke

The San Francisco 49ers hired Kyle Shanahan after the 2016 season. However, that season ended with the Atlanta Falcons blowing a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.

Shanahan was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator during their historic loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 51. Former Falcons running back Devonta Freeman recently attacked Shanahan on X.

“How (do) Dan Quinn and Kyle Shanahan still have a job and I don’t?,” Freeman wrote on X, followed by a laughing emoji.

Quinn was the head coach of the Falcons at the time and is now the head coach of the Washington Commanders. Since that Super Bowl loss, Shanahan has gone to two more Super Bowls as a head coach, but has lost both to the Kansas City Chiefs. Quinn helped lead the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game last season.

Meanwhile, Freeman has not played in the NFL since 2021. He is a two-time Pro Bowler, and his best years came under Quinn and Shanahan. He ran for 3,972 yards in 59 games for the Falcons. In 2026, the year of the infamous Super Bowl loss, he had over 1,500 scrimmage yards and 13 total touchdowns. In 2015, he led the league in total touchdowns and had 1,634 scrimmage yards. Freeman has 50 career touchdowns and 6,983 scrimmage yards.

Shanahan and Quinn have both remained successful in the NFL. However, Freeman thinks they should be faulted more for the Super Bowl 51 loss.
