Knicks showing interest in former Rookie of the Year

The New York Knicks need to build their depth this offseason in free agency. With a championship window currently open, the Knicks need to find role players who will help make a championship dream come to reality.

New York already has a solid core between Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns. What the Knicks need now is pieces that can come off the bench and contribute meaningfully.

The Knicks’ roster for the 2025-2026 season is not completely set yet. New York still has some cap space they can use up if they want to.

According to NBA insider Ian Begley, the Knicks have had several contacts with Ben Simmons and his entourage since free agency began, and the lines of communication between the two sides are still open.

“Who might the Knicks sign with that veteran’s minimum deal? They have continued to touch base with Ben Simmons during the free agency period,” Begley said.

Ben Simmons had a contract buyout with the Brooklyn Nets in February and finished this past season with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged three points, three rebounds and four assists per game.

The potential addition of Simmons would give the Knicks a player capable of extending their frontcourt rotations while also providing an additional option as a playmaker in the backcourt, given the Australian player’s versatility.

The Knicks finished last season with a loss in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Indiana Pacers in Game 6. Signing Simmons as a depth piece could help New York get back to a deep run.
