Cowboys' Jerry Jones is playing a bizarre game of chicken with Micah Parsons

Cowboys' Jerry Jones is playing a bizarre game of chicken with Micah Parsons

It feels like a fair question to ask:

What is going on with the Dallas Cowboys?

The impetus for the question is the story of the moment for America’s Team: Micah Parsons.

Parsons wants a contract extension from Dallas that would set a new NFL record for its annual average value for a non-quarterback. And without that coming, Parsons has requested a trade.

“I no longer want to be here,” Parsons wrote last week on X.

Clearly, that’s not ideal for Dallas. Parsons is the best young defender in the NFL. Letting him get away is not an ideal outcome.

Parsons is entering the final season of his contract. He’s at training camp but not practicing.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is taking an odd approach. This is what he had to say to reporters on Tuesday:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter added some wild context:

“Since Micah Parsons issued his trade request, he has not spoken to Jerry Jones.”

How is that possible?

Jones said at the end of last week that Parsons making a trade request was just part of the negotiating process. And it sounds like the owner still feels that he’s just engaged in an amusing staredown.

But there’s a real direction here where this turns into a nightmare for the Cowboys, and Jones is currently standing in the way of that crash as if the car won’t hit him.

Parsons might be expensive, but letting him get away would be even costlier.

This story isn’t over, but right now, Jones is playing a dangerous, dangerous game.
