ELLAND ROAD, LEEDS — Manchester City stole in a 1-0 halftime lead against Leeds United when Antoine Semenyo put them ahead deep into stoppage time.
Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri combined beautifully down the left channel and the latter crossed for Semenyo to net his sixth goal in 11 appearances since joining City from Bournemouth in January. It was the 26-year-old’s 14th Premier League goal of the season.
Semenyo picking up some of the goalscoring slack was welcome for Pep Guardiola, who was without Erling Haaland due to a minor knee injury and City were second best without their attacking talisman for the opening half hour.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin spurned a glorious opportunity in the fourth minute, although he would have had to come through a VAR review for a push on Marc Guehi if he’d scored. Guehi then made a vital last-ditch challenge on Brenden Aaronson before the United States international was denied in a one-on-one by the ever-imposing Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City headed into Saturday’s match five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal but with a game in hand. Mikel Arteta’s side host Chelsea in a London derby on Sunday.

40 mins: Nico O’Reilly with City’s best chance of the game! Bernardo digs out a lovely cross on the right and O’Reilly arrives to meet it with header. Darlow saves superbly but shouldn’t really have had a chance.
4 mins: Glorious chance for Calvert-Lewin! Leeds are all over City in these opening exchanges and really should be ahead. Their top scorer was unmarked – largely because of a shove on Guehi which would have been looked at by VAR – at the far post but slid wide. You were waiting for the net to bulge.
