76ers’ Joel Embiid named trade candidate, but it truly makes no sense

The Philadelphia 76ers have to feel like they’re a bit away after watching the NBA Playoffs. Unfortunately for the 76ers, there isn’t much the organization can do at the moment, as they have some bad contracts on the books and not much young talent outside of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

Unless somebody is willing to take on Joel Embiid’s contract, or especially Paul George’s, there really isn’t much that Philadelphia can do.

That’s why I think it’s important to keep Embiid around, even if people feel like he is hurt too much and has too much leeway. At the end of the day, Embiid has done a lot for this city, and outside of winning a championship, he truly has done everything he can.

That hasn’t stopped others from believing that the 76ers would love to move on from him, and should at least consider it.

“We saw the Embiid dilemma play out in fairly succinct fashion in the playoffs. He missed the first three games of the Boston series, then returned for Game 4 and was spectacular in the last three.

“Then he got hurt again against the Knicks and wasn’t the same. He’s still capable of All-NBA-level play. He also has three supermax years left on his contract. The 76ers would presumably love to escape those years if anyone wants to take a swing at the things he’s capable of when healthy,” Sam Quinn of CBS wrote.

I don’t think it’s the wrong take to think the 76ers would want to get out of his three-year, $187 million deal that doesn’t end until the 2029-30 season, but I also don’t think it’s fair to say Embiid is a bad contract by any means.

When this guy is on the court, we’re still watching one of the best players in the NBA, and it seems like the health is starting to be figured out a bit more than it has been in the past.
