The Philadelphia Phillies were almost guaranteed to make the MLB playoffs after getting hot in August and nearly catching the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. However, the last two weeks have been the most brutal stretch of games for Philadelphia this season.
It continued on Friday night after the Phillies lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. In fact, they missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot.
“The Phillies entered leading Arizona by two games for an NL wild card with three to play. The Phillies would have clinched their fifth straight playoff berth with a win against the Rays and an Arizona loss to San Diego. The Phillies instead lost their third straight and delayed a potential clincher at least until Saturday when they will throw a bullpen game against the Rays,” ESPN wrote.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are now only one game behind the Phillies, which has made things very interesting. Another thing to monitor is that Arizona has the tiebreaker over Philadelphia.
“Arizona holds the tiebreaker over the Phillies, meaning a tie after the Sunday, Sept. 27, games gives the Diamondbacks a wild-card berth,” AZ Central’s Jay Dieffenbach wrote.
It is starting to become a nightmare for the Phillies with only two games left to play. Phillies studio host Michael Barkann went absolutely nuclear on the team for choking down the stretch.
“This season is not just spiraling down the drain, it is choking down the drain. There are two games left in this season, this team has now lost nine out of their last 14 games. This is a September to forget,” Barkann said.
He didn’t hold back on the team, and losing these last two weeks is the last thing Philadelphia needed. Luis Arraez got hurt just a couple of days ago, which has seemingly made the team lose its spark even more.
The team is spiraling at the worst possible time. Barkann knows Philadelphia has likely entered territory that he doesn’t know if they can get out of. The Phillies host didn’t hold back and made his feelings very clear: The team has been abysmal.
