Saudi Pro League initiate talks with Lionel Messi over potential transfer

After hitting a few bumps on the road, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are back to the winning ways, with two consecutive victories in Major League Soccer.

Inter Miami bagged an impressive 5-1 win against Columbus Crew at Chase Stadium on Saturday, where Messi scored a brace while providing two assists.

Having multiple goal contributions in one match, Messi now recreated one of his own records for the first time since October 2022. This marked to be the 13th time he has achieved this feat in his club career and the first time for Inter Miami.

Despite his consistent efforts and contributions on the pitch for the Herons, uncertainties about his future at Inter Miami continue with his contract expiring at the end of 2025.

And now, the Saudi Pro League have once again expressed keen interest in signing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Where are Saudi Pro League on potentially acquiring Leo Messi’s signature?

After Messi parted ways with Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, Saudi clubs were heavily interested in signing him.

While the 37-year-old opted for MLS side Inter Miami instead, the SPL now see another opportunity to acquire his signature.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund has recently resumed verbal talks with Messi, according to TEAMtalk. The report also mentioned that they will be exploring their options in the coming weeks, and while nothing is confirmed as of yet, the situation is still said to be developing.

What did Lionel Messi say about potentially joining Saudi Pro League?

Back in December 2023, Messi told TIME Magazine (comments via TEAMtalk) that he did consider a move to Saudi before deciding to join the MLS.

“I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league. I know the country and they have created a very powerful competition that can become an important league in the near future,” he said.

“As the country’s tourism ambassador, it was a destination that attracted me, especially because I’ve enjoyed everything I have visited, because of how football is growing in the country and because of the effort they are putting into creating a top competition. It was Saudi Arabia or MLS, and both options seemed very interesting to me,” added Messi.

As of now, Messi and Inter Miami are preparing for their first match in this year’s Club World Cup next, which is against Egyptian side Al Ahly on June 14, at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida.
