Team USA avoided a major scare at the end of Pool B play. Manager Mark DeRosa’s premature comments about locking in a quarterfinals bid did not come back to haunt him, despite a disappointing loss to Italy — and now, the Americans are two wins away from a World Baseball Classic championship appearance.

Just weeks after the United States and Canada faced off on the ice for both the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey gold-medal games, the stakes will again be high as the two countries face off on the diamond. Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper and Bobby Witt Jr. will take on the Naylor brothers, Tyler O’Neill and more on Friday night, with the winner advancing to the WBC semifinals.

It’s officially time for the elimination bracket at the WBC; winning was always critical in pool play, but now, one loss will send a team’s stars home. Canada, which led Pool A action at 3-1, will be looking to break through with a huge win against the star-studded Americans, who finished second in Pool B at 3-1.

Logan Webb is penciled in as DeRosa’s likely starter, while Michael Soroka appears set to get the ball for the Canadians. If there’s one thing the Olympics proved, it’s that a United States vs. Canada matchup can bring plenty of drama, action and scoring. What does the baseball version have in store?
