The Los Angeles Clippers have had quite an eventful summer, to say the least, especially with all of the Kawhi Leonard-related punishments. It has been an offseason where they have remained active despite the league’s investigation.
Earlier in the summer, the Clippers made a small trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, acquiring stretch big man Johni Broome.
“The Philadelphia 76ers are trading C/F Johni Broome and a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations, sources tell ESPN. The deal allows the 76ers to stay under both first and second aprons while signing LeBron James and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
The partnership between the two was short-lived. Earlier this week, the Clippers decided to waive the former second-round pick and SEC Player of the Year due to roster reasons.
“The Clippers have waived Johni Broome, per source. The Clippers are one of several teams, including, perhaps most notably the Grizzlies, that need to trim their roster to 15 standard contracts. The Hawks took that step yesterday through their trade with the Hornets,” Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer wrote.
That was the first in a line of moves that LA made with training camp about to get underway. On Saturday, the Clippers welcomed back a familiar face by signing former second-round pick Jason Preston to a training camp contract.
“The LA Clippers have signed Hunter Sallis and Jason Preston to Exhibit 10 contracts, a league source told Spotrac,” Spotrac’s Keith Smith wrote.
Preston was highly regarded coming out of college by the Clippers, but he was never able to get things going after suffering an injury and missing his rookie season. He only appeared in 13 games for LA during his stint with the team.
He will have a chance to prove that he deserves a two-way contract at the very least. The guard has a high basketball IQ and strong ball-handling and playmaking skills, so the tools are there if he can effectively use them. At the very least, the Clippers have reunited with one of their former players.
