The Atlanta Braves had an easy choice in Game 1 of their 2026 postseason run, as they went with Chris Sale as their starting pitcher.
After him, their Game 2 decision was also easy, as Tyler Mahle was the only option they could realistically consider. He’s getting the start in Game 2 vs. the Philadelphia Phillies. But what comes next for this Braves team?
According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the Braves’ plan for their third postseason game in 2026 was revealed by Walt Weiss. Whether it’s the NLDS or the elimination Game 3 in the Wild Card, the Braves’ pitching plan has been revealed.

“Grant Holmes would be lined up to pitch a bulk of the innings if there is a Game 3 tomorrow,” Bowman reports. “Weiss didn’t say whether Holmes would start or whether he’d follow an opener (Kerr or Suter?) The Braves of course would like to avoid tomorrow’s game and have these same options for Game 1 of the NLDS.”
While the Braves are one win away from advancing to the NLDS, they still need to beat the Phillies on Wednesday to secure the division title.
It’s not going to be easy, but they do have the home-field advantage and a real chance of beating the Phillies, a team that has been collapsing as of late.
If they do secure the win, then Grant Holmes will be a bulk pitcher for the team’s first game of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers this upcoming weekend.

But, on the off chance that the Braves lose Game 2 of the NL Wild Card to the Phillies, then Holmes will have the same role as he would’ve for Game 1 of the NLDS for the winner-takes-all Game 3 of the NL Wild Card round.
Atlanta could also use an opener in this matchup for Holmes, giving him an easier entry into the game in the second inning against the later half of the lineup.
Whether it’s to avoid Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, or Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, an opener would make a lot of sense for the Braves with Holmes set to fill in a bulk role.
While the game in which this plan will be utilized isn’t known yet, it’s clear the Braves intend to pitch Holmes in some capacity in their third postseason game.
